Gold Hill
Young friends of the woodland
The new community woodland project at Shepton Mallet’s Goldhill is well underway – thanks to the efforts of some of the town’s youngest residents.
Pupils from Shepton Mallet Infant School and St Paul’s Junior School helped to plant trees on the three-acre site last week.
The project has been funded by Somerset County Council and the Duchy of Cornwall, owners of the site.
During the planting the C-Change Trust, a carbon offsetting charity, helped the children learn about the importance of woodland and how trees can have a bearing on climate change.
The Duchy of Cornwall funded the fencing and, with a contribution by the Forestry Commission, provided the trees.
The scheme has also been supported by Shepton Mallet Town Council, which decided what kind of trees should be planted on the Goldhill site and how the woodland area should be set out.
