Greater London Hire - London's green award winning taxi, courier and hire firm

A family owned taxi and vehicle hire company in London.

Aware of their impact on the environment they called in the c-change trust as part of their sustainability drive.

They have purchased a fleet of 50 Toyota Prius hybrid cars and are currently testing electric vans to replace their diesel vehicles. They have also changed their electricity supplier to Ecotricity. As a result of their activity, they have recently received an ISO:14001 award in recognition of their progress and recently won the prestigious 2007 Greenfleet awards.

Since working with the c-change trust GLH have a dedicated environmental manager in Zoe Powers and have now slashed their carbon footprint by 22% in the last year exceeding the 2020 UK government target already!

Hemp is the way forward for sustainable building and insulation

HGS and The C-Change Trust have partnered to develop a system for offsetting and retiring carbon emissions through UK hemp cultivation. Check out the science page to see our calculations for hemp carbon absorption.

The C-Change Trust gives business and individuals the opportunity to acknowledge and offset their carbon emissions through charitable donation. In return they invest 75% of all donations into funding projects that will reduce carbon emissions, educate the young on climate change and create new woodlands right here in the U.K.

The partnership will bring HGS’ hemp expertise and research and The C-Change Trusts carbon and UK offset experience to a scheme which offers multiple additional benefits to the environment. The project has the potential to be scaled up to global levels as it is based on agricultural land and offers valuable resources, eliminating costs.

the c-change trust's 'Carbon Gym' voted pick of the bunch

As part of our first emissions reduction project we thought we’d create an online tool to help householders to not only measure their carbon emissions, but give detailed advice and links to help reduce them by making a series of pledges. The carbon footprint is seen in relation to future government CO2 reduction targets.

We embarked on the project with the ‘National Energy Foundation’ who are experts on energy efficiency - the project became known as ‘the carbon gym’ and the brief was to create the most useful and accurate carbon calculator we could.

The calculator has since been approved by DEFRA and used by hundreds of people to help reduce emissions, the carbon gym was recently voted pick of the bunch by the Sunday Observer.

The idea was written by the c-change trust and programmed by Patrick dobson of Moonspace designs with technical help and extra development from Sarah Coe, Ian Byrne and Tim Lunel from the NEF.

Woodland partners in Wales are a sustainable concern

Coed Marros Cooperative – Carmarthenshire, Wales

‘The cooperative was founded in 2006 by four core members who have brought together a wide range of expertise on woodland management, green woodworking, ecology and permaculture’.

In 2007 the c-change trust planted 3000 native broadleaf trees including ash, oak, beech and hazel.

The c-change trust, the UK’s first registered charity devoted exclusively to “ethical carbon offsetting” will begin planting its first broadleaf woodland next month, it announced today.

School children from Somerset, involved in a pilot carbon emission education scheme, will take part in a planting ceremony in Coed Marros, Pendine, Carmarthen, South Wales on Wednesday 21 February.

Jonathan Ekin (36), co-founder of the trust, said: “We have received sufficient donations and pledges from individuals and businesses to fund several thousand broadleaf trees. We are also in talks with landowners around the country to identify our next planting locations.”

Mr Ekin, added: “Clearly, planting oaks, ash and other broadleaf trees, especially on this scale, is not going to make a huge difference to global warning. But every tree planted helps to reinforce the message that we all have a contribution to make. Equally important, tree planting creates new native woodlands, which provide environmental centres for wildlife, along with recreational and educational areas for people, especially children.”

Global hit band 'The Scissor Sisters' donate to c-change

Scissor Sisters show their support for green projects
The Scissor Sisters, in acknowledgement of the impact their tours have on the environment, have donated £6,500 to the c change trust.

The funds will be used to plant broadleaf woodland and invested into the c-change trust’s education programme, “carbon busters”, spear headed by Melanie Merrill, who featured in ITN’s ‘The Green Life’.

The c-change trust was the Scissor Sisters’ chosen organisation with whom to invest, as they are the only UK organisation working to reduce carbon emissions on a purely charitable basis. The trust guarantees that 75p of every pound will go directly towards projects that reduce emissions, both via creating new woodlands in the UK and educating school children.

Charitable donations have been coordinated by the Cato Trust, which fundraises for charities within the UK in collaboration with national bands, artists and venues.

The Scissor Sisters’ official spokesman said: “the band is extremely excited to be able to support the c-change trust, whose work they whole-heartedly support.”
